Ready for the next five tips in our YouTube series? Let’s dive right into this fresh scoop on crafting unforgettable content for YouTube.
Tip 6: Get into shorts
Short-form content is no longer optional—it’s a critical step toward reaching a wider audience. YouTube collects data from its shorts and is more likely to recommend long-form content from the same channel if the viewer stayed engaged when watching shorter clips.
There’s a higher likelihood of reaching a new audience member through a 60-second clip, which then helps them discover your channel and hopefully stay engaged with a 10-minute video.
Tip 7: Connect to trending themes
If your brand is open to having a little light-hearted fun on social, finding creative ways to piggyback on trends can attract a larger audience.
For example, don’t assume the “Get Ready With Me” trend is just for cosmetics gurus. A garage door repair company could share a video of a service person stocking their truck and rolling out for the day. Customers might enjoy seeing all the unfamiliar tools and labeled parts.
Tip 8: Consider the viewer’s journey
When planning your content, do you consider the viewer’s journey? If you can create a natural progression from one video to the next, you’re creating and then satisfying demand. A well-thought-out channel will naturally encourage viewers to linger. Prolonged engagement is a signal to YouTube’s algorithm that you have content viewers are enjoying, which can increase the odds of YouTube recommending your channel to more viewers.
Here are some possible strategies—for both content and channel setup—to lengthen user journeys on your channel:
- Create intrigue by introducing questions or challenges, then delivering a series of related content that explains the solutions to these challenges or answers the questions.
- Thoroughly explore a step-by-step process, making one video for each step.
- If you release the same video at a certain time each year, find new angles to showcase. An apple orchard is a fun place to take kids, but if your fall promo video has featured cuties picking apples in plaid year after year, maybe it’s time to feature a series with customers making some lesser-known apple recipes.
- Connect related videos by using the “What to Watch Next” module that YouTube makes available for your subscribers.
- Add links to the same related content within your videos’ descriptions, with a teaser explaining why someone should watch.
- Design playlists that group similar themes of videos together.
Tip 9: Enable and read viewer comments
A perfect way to naturally grow your channel is to listen to your audience’s ideas.
Does your audience want you to talk more about a specific subject? Maybe they have unanswered questions that arose after your last video? Letting your audience comment is a chance to discover exactly what content they want. Show you’re present by posting short, simple replies.
It’s inevitable that unwanted comments will show up. Gently correct misunderstandings or misinformed viewers, but there’s no need to engage with trolls. When it’s inflammatory or not constructive in nature, it’s fine to report the comment and remove it.
Tip 10: Avoid covering content beyond your brand or expertise
As you attract more subscribers, you might be tempted to push beyond your decided niche. But expanding your niche too quickly can cause your viewers to lose interest and feel left behind. Remember: Your audience is growing and staying because they love your channel for what it does offer, not the content it doesn’t.
Stay focused on the viewer’s journey and allow your niche to naturally expand alongside your audience and the shared interests that relate to your brand.
Bonus Tip: The Sweet Spot
The best way to create valuable content is finding the sweet spot between your brand’s unique perspective and the information your audience wants to know.
So, while there might be a million YouTube videos on similar topics, your perspective might be the essential secret ingredient that makes your brand’s video content worth watching and remembering.
